Heart Of The Matter
Complacency - A Close Call
This was not a day for complacency,
And I should have known better…
I know the signs of winter,
The hard frost of early morning,
The glistening of rooftops,
The snow on distant hill,
I should have known better,
But I settled for routine,
My mind on auto pilot,
My thoughts on other things,
I let habit take control,
I drove the car,
My road always clear,
And the sun shone bright, and low,
As it does this time of year,
I was blinded,
I couldn't see …
As I took the bend ahead of me,
And suddenly I'm spinning,
In a car I can't control,
I saw my life flash by me,
Final journey of the soul,
And still the car is spinning,
In a perfect pirouette,
And round and round,
Slow motion,
No sign of stopping yet,
The other cars avert me,
As I drift into their lane,
And I pray the end comes quickly,
And my passing knows no pain,
I saw the tree, the barrier,
Please God, I go alone,
And suddenly the spinning stopped,
Not my time,
For going home ….
Yes, every day's a school day,
Another lesson learned,
Be cautious on this road, called life,
When you can't see …
Round the bend.
