Torn From the Pages of My Heart

I See Her

I see her.
No, it isn't a trick of light.
I see her... emerging
From the creaking, opening door
Every shadowed footstep breaking
The light flooding on the floor.

I see her clearly now
In the dim light
The spark of tears in eyes
Of searing sable cobblestones,
The tremble in the lips
Tightly shut to muffle a sob.

My feet threaten to give way
For I feel her pain in my chest
My mind sees the fight she's put up
With every strength in her heart
Against every tear reality gives her
And how she's tried sewing it back.

Fighting the shudder in my shoulders,
I reach for her face and whisper,
“Hush, now. I'll take care of you.
I'm not so strong but I'll fight for you.”
My fingers touch the cool surface
Of the looking glass in my room.
