Shell   (Object Poem or Not?)

I carried you on my back.
Eight years in all you comforted me,
kept my soft body from harm,
from the prying jaws of my enemies.
I carried you on my back.
You became a part of me-
my strength, my resolve, my confidence.
And though you were separate from me,
to the outside world
you were my sum total.
I carried you on my back.
A tapering object of beauty,
a receptacle of necessity,
a symbol of practicality.
We were opposites
with a common cause.
Each year we both grew larger,
one accommodating the other
in a race that neither would win.
I carried you on my back
until fate
separated us.
Me, out-growing you,
you left to fend for yourself
lying helpless
in the shifting waves along the shore.
Do you feel abandoned?

Written during a timed exercise with prompt

paid Thursday writing seminar.
